Accommodation. Information for families

If you are a family interested in hosting a foreign university student in your home, you can find all the information in this section.

The increase in the number of foreign university students participating in the Spanish Language and Culture Courses programme of the University of La Rioja and who choose the option of accommodation in host families, leads us to request the collaboration of possible families interested in receiving a foreign university student in their homes.

Students participate in a Spanish language study programme. Classes are held throughout the academic year, but the summer course, which next academic year will be held from 30 June to 25 July 2025, is the one with the highest demand for host family accommodation.

In summer, classes are held from 9:00 to 13:30 and students take part in cultural activities on some afternoons.

We ask families to be available to host a student during the summer course from 28 June to 27 July, in order to allow students two days to settle in on arrival and to collect their luggage at the end of the course.

The financial compensation received by the family for the stay of a student is €700/month. Payment will be made towards the middle of the stay in the manner indicated by the University of La Rioja Foundation at the time.

If you are interested in participating in this programme and hosting a foreign student, please fill in the form that you can download below and send it by e-mail (espanol@unirioja.es) or hand it in personally at the University of La Rioja Foundation.

Once we receive the information about your family, a member of the Foundation's team will contact you to arrange a home visit.

Characteristics and commitments

The following are the characteristics of the programme and the commitments made by the host family:

  • All students are of legal age.
  • Students can come from all over the world, so their customs are different from ours. Families should bear in mind that in many cases they will need time to adjust to the new timetable and the new environment. Mutual respect will be the basis for a good coexistence.
  • Always speak to the student in Spanish.
  • At all times we will try to take into account the preferences for the allocation of students, both of the students and of the family, in order to ensure that the coexistence is satisfactory for both parties.
  • The family will pick up the student on the day of arrival in Logroño at the agreed place and at the end of the stay will accompany the student to the corresponding station (bus station, train station, Logroño airport).
  • The student will have a single room with a bed, a wardrobe and a desk.
  • The host family must provide the student with: breakfast, lunch and dinner, every day of the week and, if required on an excursion, packed lunches (snacks, drinks...). Laundry is included in the price. The student can do the laundry individually or with the family.
  • At least two meals a day, one of them lunch, will be in the company of the family, as the interest of this type of accommodation is to promote immersion in Spanish culture through daily coexistence.
  • It is very important for the family to ask the student directly if there are any foods that he/she cannot eat for any reason, as well as possible allergies or illnesses
that should be taken into account.
  • The family will provide the student with a copy of the keys to the family home on the day of arrival.
  • Families who agree not to smoke inside the house must respect this.
  • If you receive other foreign students in your home during the same stay, you must inform the University of La Rioja Foundation. If during the student's stay in the host family any doubt or setback should arise, please contact the University of La Rioja Foundation as soon as possible.
