Grants for Spanish Courses

Open call for Foreign Universities

The second call for applications for Spanish language grants from the Campus Valle de la Lengua is now open. These scholarships are aimed at foreign students who wish to take one of the Spanish Language and Culture Courses at the University of La Rioja. The main objective of this grant programme is to promote Spanish around the world, encouraging international students to study Spanish as a foreign language at the University of La Rioja. We also seek to expand our internationalisation network and strengthen existing bonds.

About our Spanish Language and Culture Courses

The Spanish Language and Culture Courses by the University of La Rioja are designed for students of any nationality who wish to learn or improve their Spanish skills. Taught by specialized university professors, they combine systematic instruction in grammar and vocabulary with the practice of communicative skills.

  • Intensive courses of 15 to 20 hours per week.
  • Various levels, adapted to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
  • Studying different aspects of Spanish culture.
  • A diploma of completion indicating the level reached.
  • Optional SIELE certification from the Cervantes Institute, certifying the student’s Spanish proficiency.

Grant characteristics

These scholarships cover:

  • Tuition fees of the preferred Spanish Language and Culture course.
  • Accommodation during the period of the chosen course.
    • The maximum amount of aid for accommodation will be used exclusively for this accommodation and cannot be used for other expenses, neither by the home university nor the University of La Rioja.
    • The University of La Rioja will look for appropriate accommodation for students, depending on availability.

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. This means that various scoring criteria will be evaluated to publish a list of candidate universities. Then, if your university has been selected, we will contact your candidate to manage their grant. The total program budget is 54,736 euros. The final number of scholarships will depend on the participating universities and the selected courses.

Course types to choose from

Each university may apply for a scholarship for one course from the following options:

  • Spring Semester: January 8 – June 6, 2025
  • Winter Quarter: January 8 – March 18, 2025
  • Spring Quarter: March 20 – June 6, 2025
  • Monthly Option 1: January 8 – 31, 2025
  • Monthly Option 2: March 20 – April 11, 2025
  • Monthly Option 3: May 5 – 30, 2025
  • Summer Course: June 30 – July 25, 2025

Requirements and eligibility

Requirements for Universities:

  • The home university must have a department, section, unit or similar related to language, culture, history, economics or art that is linked in some way to Spanish.
  • The home university must carry out an internal selection process to choose the final potential candidate.

Beneficiaries:

Therefore, the beneficiaries of these grants will be foreign universities that meet the aforementioned requirements, although it will be the student designated by the home university who will receive the scholarship.

Assessment criteria for candidate universities

The score obtained by each university will be assessed considering the following criteria:

  • Having a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or any other collaboration agreement with the University of La Rioja to promote student and staff mobility (up to 25 points).
  • Total number of students from the foreign university enrolled in Spanish language and culture courses at the University of La Rioja during the 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024 courses (up to 25 points):
    • 1 to 15 students: 10 points
    • 16 to 25 students: 15 points
    • 26 to 50 students: 25 points
  • Motivation letter that includes at least the following considerations (up to 50 points):
    • Number of Spanish language students at the applicant foreign university.
    • Spanish language training programme taught at the applicant foreign university.
    • Number of students from the applicant foreign university who study annually in Spain.
    • Grounds or reason for the interest of the applicant foreign university in establishing collaboration with the University of La Rioja.

Application process

  • The home university will carry out the selection of a student, as indicated above.
  • The potential home universities must apply by filling in the following online form: https://forms.office.com/e/xQekkKCLrS
  • Along with the with the form, it will be necessary to attach:
    • Application form (ANNEX I) signed by the rector/accredited person by the university.
    • If it is not the rector who signs the ANNEX I, please submit: ANNEX II, Letter/Certificate of representation of the home university of the person signing the ANNEX I application (e.g. Head of the Spanish department).
    • Copy of the passport of the selected person as the final recipient of the scholarship.
    • Letter/Certificate from the home university stating that the student has been selected.
    • Commitment of the selected student to undertake the course that constitutes the basis for the granting of this subsidy on behalf of and for their University. This document must be signed by the home University and the student (ANNEX III).
    • Letter/Certificate from the home university stating that the student is enrolled in the academic year.

Deadline

Applications must be submitted until November 11, 2024, 23:59 CET (UTC+01:00). Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

About the Valle de la Lengua Project

Valle de la Lengua Project is one of the priority lines of action of the Valle de la Lengua strategic project. This project has been promoted by the Government of La Rioja to take advantage of Spanish as a tool for development. It includes actions in different areas, including learning and teaching.

In this area, the University of La Rioja plays a key role as a strategic partner for the development of differential and innovative training and conference activities about Spanish Language and Culture.
